Hey all, first time long time hereā€¦

So Iā€™ve been using Zcash4win for a couple of months now, and so far everything has been OK. I had an issue a while back where I guess I closed the program while it was syncing and it caused errors where I had to reindex overnight to fix the problem. Scared the hell out of me cause this is my first hardware wallet and the thought of loosing all of your money sucksā€¦ but in the end all was well.

Now Iā€™m having another issue, and it seems to be one that other people have also had, where the ā€œdaemon was taking too long to startā€ which I donā€™t want to go into detail here again since Iā€™ve read the other threads, but the crux of it all comes to the location of the wallet being on my main C:\ drive which of course like most people in 2018 is an SSD.

I did not want the blockchain on my SSD, it is only 5Gb, true, but it isnā€™t getting smaller, and over time it will only be harder and longer to migrate, so I decided to do the virtual pointing of the zcash folder to my secondary D:\ 2TB drive. That all seemed to go well and it saw it and was resyncing and then I ran into a different problem re: the block height as mentioned above.
Iā€™m rambling now I know, lol, but a couple of things I learned from this that I would be very pleased to see in the future.

  1. If it is a problem to close Zcash4win before it is fully synced, their should be a warning A) when you open it and before it starts syncing so you have the option to opt out if you realize you donā€™t have enough time to perform the operation, and B) when you close it [if not fully synced] it should warn you that you could [will] have problems if you continue. You can also put in the ā€œdo not warn me this information againā€ checkbox so at least new users see it once. I was never told that, and this being my first wallet, was not something I was aware of.
  2. Zcash4win should have GUI elements or batch files or something that doesnā€™t force the user to run to google to lookup and error and then have to use manual Powershell commands to perform a reindexing. Zcash4win has a nice slick GUI already, having people swap to command prompt is above the majority of people who came to the wallet for the slick GUI in the first place.
  3. Their should be an easy way to change the default location of the blockchain database either A) on initial installation, or B) after installation. Resorting to tricking the OS is not a viable long term solution.
  4. An option to have the whole wallet run direct from a USB thumb drive would be nice. I would love to be able to use something like Safedisk explorer on a 64gb usb drive that encrypts ALL of the Zcash4win data when I am not using it. I know that is overkill, but programs like that do not add any noticeable overhead and it is nice to have one condensed .sdsk file that I can move around or keep copies of easily without having to backup individual files like the wallet and proving key. Plus, this would allow me to take my wallet anywhere.
Maybe their is a way to have something like this now, Iā€™m not sure.

Anywho, for now, I am kinda stuck without a working wallet and have since pointed my miners to a different endpoint. I just donā€™t feel secure with the current beta state of the program and how fragile it seems. Once I get my wallet up and working again, Iā€™ll likely finish my open orders on Nano and Flypool then transfer out until a later date. Itā€™s early, Iā€™m cranky, and I need ma coffee

Oh, and a wiki page or some structured informational webpage that covers commonly asked things would be great. No one should have to read though month old and page long threads to seek answers to problems.
That was fine when it first came out, but now this page has 983 posts. Lol. Aint no one got time for that!

After crash I resaved my backed up wallet to %AppData%\Zcash\wallet.dat ā€¦ and restarted zcash4win,ā€¦ looks like it is rebuilding my transactions. Are these date based? Because it keeps rebuilding.
Iā€™m guessing I just need to let it all rebuild? pretty slow
thx

ā€¦ editā€¦ wowā€¦ It worked!! Great work on this David.

so very strange but I have two seperate machines each running separate zcash4win wallets and today when I opened them up both of them I received this message Untitled
and now when i try to open the wallet on either machine it gives the daemon is taking too long to respond messageā€¦

if i look at the log it says

Fixed by reading your twitter post :stuck_out_tongue:

I was being a good soldier and started reading at about January 1 looking for the solution. I even looked at your twitter (but not for very long, catboy is mind fucked) Eventually I got to your most recent post and fixed the problem in about 30 seconds

So the wallet is fucked up. Again, is it? Fantasticā€¦
A 1.3 Billion US dollar business. Handled by one personā€¦
Wow.

I just started getting "Daemon is taking longer than expected to start: error. How can I fix this. I have tried everything that worked from previous errors of this one, but nothing is working here. I even tried to uninstall delete all zcash4win files and reinstall. Still cant get it to run.

Regards,
Jeff

add the following line:

disabledeprecation=1.0.12

to the file %AppData%\Zcash\zcash.conf

and then start it again

If that doesnā€™t do it delete everything but zcash.conf and wallet.dat from the above directory and then fire it up again

There is nothing in that folderā€¦%AppData%\Zcash\zcash.conf. No files in thereā€¦

I deleted all and uninstalled then reinstalled. No files in the folder. Thanks

what antivirus/antimalware are you using? People have had random weird issues with anything other than Microsoftā€™s Windows Defender

Kaperskyā€¦but I have it turned off

what shows up at the end of %AppData%\Zcash\debug.log when you try and launch it?
